Biographie

Redmond O'Toole was born in 1977 in Bray, Ireland. His principal teachers have been Oscar Ghiglia, Paul Galbraith and John Feeley. In 2003 he became the winner of the inaugural RDS Music Bursary (Ireland's largest music prize) which marked the beginning of a professional career which has since seen him perform throughout Europe and in South America. He holds a masters degree from the Dublin College of Music (DIT) after which he spent four successive summers at the Academia Chigiana in Siena. Redmond has released two CDs with Frankfurt based company Bornheim Klassik, has made a number of videos for Classic FMTV and is currently the subject of a documentary by Areaman Productions.

In addition to solo recitals Redmond also appears regularly with 'The Chieftains' and in duo with Cora Venus Lunny. He has also performed with the Callino Quartet (strings), Elizabeth Cooney(violin) and Charlotte Reijkin (soprano).

Redmond is the first in the world to adapt Paul Galbraith's groundbreaking technique and instrument. He performs on an 8 string guitar in the position of a cello connected to a resonating box. The technique delivers great freedom to both hands and allows for the adaptation of new music for the guitar. The instrument was invented in 1994 by Galbraith with English Luthier David Rubio.
